چکیده

Traditional broadband transmission method for measuring acoustic dispersion and attenuation requires the measurement of the thickness of the specimen, the transmission coecient at the water±specimen interface, and the Fourier spectra of two transmitted pulses. A new method has recently been developed that can determine both the thickness and dispersion of the specimen by utilizing the phase spectra of two additional pulses re ̄ected back from the front and back surfaces of the specimen. In this paper, the method is further extended to the measurement of attenuation. If the density of the specimen is known, the frequency-dependent transmission coecient can be determined based on the measured phase velocity, and only the amplitude spectra of the two transmitted pulses are used to determine the attenuation. If the density of the specimen is unknown, the attenuation can be determined from the amplitude spectra of all the four pulses. In both cases, the thickness estimated from the phase spectra of the four pulses is utilized. Experimental results from two specimens are presented to demonstrate the application of the new method. Measurement of acoustic dispersion using both transmitted and reflected pulses

Traditional broadband transmission method for measuring acoustic dispersion requires the measurements of the sound speed in water, the thickness of the specimen, and the phase spectra of two transmitted ultrasound pulses. When the sound speed in the specimen is significantly different from that in water, the overall uncertainty of the dispersion measurement is generally dominated by the uncerta...

Determination of ultrasonic parameters based on attenuation and dispersion measurements.

In the measurement of acoustic attenuation that obeys a power-low alpha = beta f, the traditional through-transmission method uses only the amplitude information of the recorded pulses to determine the two parameters, beta and n. In this paper, we propose a new method that utilizes both the amplitude and phase information of the pulses to determine the two parameters. According to this method, ...

Determination of sediments diameter using acoustic waves

The use of acoustic waves in researches related to sea water is of most importance among scientists recently. Since these waves are the only waves, transmitted in water with lowest attenuation and high speed, they can be used in many scientific fields. The main goal of this research is to better understand the physics and mechanisms of sound-seabed interaction, including acoustic penetration, p...

Design, manufacture and the evaluation of Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System (FATS)

Underwater Acoustic Tomography (AT) system transmits acoustic waves into the water. The AT systems continuously measure the physical characteristics of the flow in rivers, seas and the oceans. The AT systems are synchronized via a GPS clock connectied to the satellites. Hence, the systems transmit the acoustic waves at the same time. The systems record the arrival time of acoustic waves. After ...

Direct measurement of ultrasonic dispersion using a broadband transmission technique

A broadband, through-transmission technique is described that measures directly the change in phase velocity with frequency without first measuring the absolute phase velocity at different frequencies. The method only requires the measurement of the specimen’s thickness and recording of two pulses: one without and one with the specimen inserted between the transmitting and receiving transducers...
